ABOUT THE RESOURCES
ESL Lifeline offers a variety of resources available in this subscription. All resources come with resource notes that detail explicitly how to best use the resources and get them most out of them in the classroom. At times, they will include information about recommended instructional practices that work best for that specific resource. This will have information about setting up activities, using PowerPoints, sending resources on Google Drive (where applicable), and setting up more complex tasks.
- ANSWER KEYS: Where applicable, the resources will have answer keys included in the resource notes for the teacher to use. Lesson plans usually have the answer keys embedded within the pacing of the lesson plan itself.
- LESSON PLANS: For more advanced materials, there will be full lesson plans in addition to resource notes. Lesson plans follow a standard format, giving you pacing and instructional practices that fit that specific resource. Where applicable, there will be differentiation and alternative teaching strategies indicated. Lesson plans were written to give teachers a way to use that specific resource in a way that benefits an entire class. The timing of the lesson always depends on the classroom dynamics and teacher preferences; however, many of ESL Lifeline’s materials can be used for extended periods of time, over multiple class periods.
- TOPICS: One of many things that sets ESL Lifeline’s resources apart from others are the topics chosen to teach the language. Using a wide range of relevant, high-interest topics – such as Radicalization, Media Bias, ChatGPT, Cyberbullying, and many more – language students can more easily access complex topics in a way that caters to their language learning needs.
GETTING THE MOST OUR OF THE CONTENT
Teachers from all over the world have used ESL Lifeline’s resources and materials with great success. A lot of the feedback received has to do with the breadth of content and how much there is in a single lesson. Some teachers have even said they can get 1-2 week out of a single reading comprehension lesson.
- While the experience of each lesson will vary depending on the teacher, class demographic and other key variables, many lessons plans ESL Lifeline provides have been written to extend past a single class session. To get the most out of all the content in each lesson plan and all the materials, always consider the pacing of your particular class and how students are responding to the lesson in the moment. For language learning, it is often beneficial to revisit certain parts of a lesson to reinforce concepts and check comprehension. Extending skill lessons into even small, more manageable chunks is also a good strategy to ensure all learners in your class are able to access the content.
- Many of the lessons and activities offer extension activities for productive follow-ups that take the subject and language even further. If you are looking to extend or, even, differentiate the learning, it is recommended to use these activities.
- All of ESL Lifeline’s material is produced in high-resolution color. Many of the resources and materials are available in two additional versions: gray-scale and digital. A lot of the resources use visuals to help aid comprehension and accessibility. Depending on the number of copies you make, printing these pages year after year can become a burden on printers over time. To accommodate for this, where indicated, ESL Lifeline’s materials can be printed using the gray-scale printer-friendly versions.
- To make the pages more printer-friendly and reduce the amount of toner your printer uses, the pages use less images, heavy shadows have been removed, the page has been reformatted into gray-scale. At times, parts of the text may have been rearranged for aesthetic purposes but the content never changes an remains the same. If this option is available in the resource you wish to access, it will be included in the PDF download.
- Digital Access: These materials and resources are also available on digital formats via the Google Suite. Many of the lessons can be accessed using Google Slides, where your students can interact with the content and fill in their answers. Some resources even have Google Docs materials and other elements of the Suite. If this option is available in the resource you wish to access, there will be a Digital Access page with a link to the resource in the PDF download.
- You may have the need to teach remotely for a number of reasons: you teach in an online environment; you have students who attend the school remotely; you have student who may be sick at home but still need to complete assignments. For whatever reason, being able to send a digital link of a resource to one of your students can be extremely helpful.
