The 18 different flights on the board shift up and change their status from boarding to delayed to cancelled. Students have to pay close attention, scan the screen quickly, and locate the time, destination, flight#, gate, and status of different flights.
This is the perfect resource for English Language teachers who have students that need isolated practice in scanning for building reading comprehension. Being good at scanning is all about speed. Airport departure boards require us to quickly scan through lots of information that may or may not be important to us.
The multimedia elements in this scanning skills package get students to practice scanning to find key details like:
- Flight number
- Destination

- Gate number
- Status
The immersive, realistic set up makes it fun and engaging to locate important information you need quickly, just as you would need to in a real-world airport setting.
HOW IT WORKS
You begin this activity using a PowerPoint, that sets the stage with brainstorming tasks and direct instruction. There are animated GIFs embedded in the PowerPoint that preps students for the more difficult Departure Board Video, where there are 18 different flights!
The PowerPoint is paced along side a student worksheet that gets students to actively participate with the direct instruction. Before the video, they will practice with questions like ‘What flight leaves from gate E7?” and “Which flight was cancelled?”
The Departure Board Video offers the most challenging scanning opportunities. With 18 different flights, and status changes often, you students will learn how to quickly locate what they need by experiencing it just as they would at an airport. You can get students to use separate task cards for the video, or give them the gap-fill handout. More more controlled practice, there are also scanning questions like “What gate does RM98 leave from?” and “What is the earliest flight on the departures board?”
Use one activity or do them all! This package is gives you a lot of variety that you students will love.

**When using this resource, it is also recommended that the MP4 video be played multiple times. The PowerPoint presentation GIFs and animations are pre-keyed and sequenced. Changing the slides and animations may result in the presentation not working as intended.
